The Children's Family Trust is a registered charity (no.208607) and was founded in 1945, by Paul Field.
The Trust provides secure, supportive and nurturing foster homes for children in need. In 2003 the Trust broadened its work from a narrow focus on permanent care for children who need long-term fostering, to include those needing short-term care.
A study in 1997 ("Foster Care in Crisis" by the National Foster Care Association) showed that children in care were -
12 times more likely to leave school with no qualification
10 times more likely to be excluded from school
60 times more likely to end up homeless
4 times more likely to suffer from mental health problems
88 times more likely to be drug abusers.
The study went on to show that the children of these young people were themselves 66 times more likely to also end up in "public care", and at an earlier age.
The Trust aims to break that cycle by providing children with the basis from which they can successfully grow as individuals to become responsible self-supporting members of society. The way this is done is by ensuring that each child in its care is given the right family environment and support as well as by giving the foster carers themselves the training and professional support they need, too.
There are at any one time, approximately 60,000 "looked after children" i.e. in care.
With a long and successful history of looking after such children, the work of the Trust is needed as much now as it has ever been.
